How do I install linux Fedora on my pc?

My pc is a Compaq presario 2266 running Windows 98. I downloaded the .iso images from the internet and burned them onto a cd, but when I get to the boot menu and select CD-ROM, it just goes straight to Windows!

  1. I would pull down Ubuntu at www.ubuntu.com. Ubuntu is easy to download. You can download a CD image and burn it yourself using a CD writer. You can download the ISO file directly, or join the Torrent by downloading the equivalent .torrent file from the download site of your choice. The download of a single ISO CD image is around 700MB.

I have installed different versions of Red Hat and SUSE but have found that Ubuntu is the easiest install for Linux. In fact, I found it easier than installing Windows.

First I pulled down the Desktop CD of Ubuntu 6.06 ISO and burned it to a CD. Ubuntu fits on one CD-Rom disk, nice. Then after setting the BIOS settings to boot off the CD-Rom/DVD drive I inserted the CD with the Ubuntu 6.06 ISO.

After booting from the Ubuntu CD, you can test drive it to see if you want to install it on your hard disk. If so, there is a handy install icon. Select the icon, answer a few standard questions for language, timezone, userID, and password and it will install.

  2. It sounds like a bad download or a bad CD-ROM. Honestly, if you don't mind forking over some money, I would buy a book that comes with the distro, or order the disk set on line. One other option is any major book store should carry Linux mag.'s that come with a distro (Linux Format usually comes with that distro).
  3. Them fedoras are some fine looking hats. Why on earth would you want your PC to wear one?
  4. You guys do realize he was asking the procedure it takes to install it and not where he can download the software. Can someone give step by step instructions on HOW to put a new OS system on your computer if you are current running windows 98 and you are using a CD as your boot disk?
  5. SUSE Linux 10.1
    Downloads
    SUSE Linux Download

SUSE Linux is created by the openSUSE project and is freely downloadable from Novell or from mirror sites around the world. At openSUSE.org, you have the choice of downloading the latest released version of SUSE Linux, (version 10.1) or the newest development build of the next version of SUSE Linux (now called openSUSE 10.2).

If possible, please download SUSE Linux from a mirror in your vicinity. Please note that download versions of SUSE Linux are not eligible for free installation support.

    * Go to the download pages.

    SUSE Linux 10.1 Live version

SUSE makes the live version of SUSE Linux available for download as an ISO image. This version runs entirely from the bootable DVD and is not installed on the hard disk.

If you want to get to know SUSE Linux or test if your hardware is fully supported, the live version is the right choice for you.

Download the live DVD ISO image here.
