1. You can use the yahoo's web messenger..

   Click the following link and then click "Launch Web Messenger" at the very (very) bottom of the page:

   http://messenger.yahoo.com/

   It runs on Java I believe, compatible with Linux & Unix.

   There are probably even some linux-compatible messenger replacement programs that allow you to connect to your yahoo messenger friends list, sort of like what Trillian or Miranda do..
