What is the main difference between Linux & Unix Operating system?
- the letters L and the order of letters inux in their name
otherwise there very similar. - Most people disagree slightly on this question. It all depends on ones perspective, but generally Unix is a server-oriented operating system that was aimed to support a multi-user environment. The architecture behind Unix was to provide a simple modular operating system, yet ophisticated, to support an array of multi-user and network tasks.
Linux is a variant of Unix, created by Linus Torvalds, that shares common characteristics but is not identical by any means. It can run on a variety of hardware from Intel to PowerPC CPU systems. The most significant aspect about Linux is that the kernel or the core of the operating is freely distributed so developers all over the globe can modify the source code and use it for their own purposes without any licensing or IP concerns.
- like DOS and windows.
unix is commandline oriented and linux has a Graphical user interface. - one is free open source (linux) , the other is not
- one isnt windows and the other isnt osx
- Linux is derived from Unix. If I had to guess, I would say that Linux was intended to be more user friendly. How do we take this very strong and capable OS, Unix and make it usable in the home environment? I think Linux is a process of that sort of thinking. It just so happens that Linux is more then capable enough to do all of the things that Unix can do which also happens to be better then anything that Windows can do.
- linux is the free version and unix is basially for enterprize or for business use . the main difference is linux is more friendly in terms of apllication part (whatever you see ) and unix is not that much
