1. In terms of the kernel itself, I believe it is mostly written in straight C code, with some in C++. The same with the GNU utilities.

3. C, C++ and java are widely used on LINUX
4. C, C++, Java, Perl are the ones I use most frequently. My guess would be C by far outstrips every other language on Linux. I cant however quote any statistical proof for that though!
