What wireless card can be used with Operating System Linux?

I just installed Linux XP on my Dell Latitude laptop and I need to know what wireless card I can purchase that is usable with Linux.

  1. The "version" is (XP). Linux XP.
  2. depends , ur laptop is new? does it have one inbuilt..

also depends on your version of linux you use..

if you go to the makers page, look for "hardware compatibility list"..

the wifi thats in my laptop is "intel" based, so its a major brand.. so normally all the known branded names are supported as they are used by many.

you might also check the wifi card makers page, and see if they support linux.. some won't commit to say they do or don't.

but normally if u go for well known brands , then theres normally no problem.

  3. The Laptop is a Dell Latitude Cpi
  4. This is a very good question. I installed Suse 10.2 on a client's machine because my partner wanted to save money. Well. About midnight I found that the wireless card did not support Linux. This was a major manufacturer of wireless cards mind you. Well I found that I could download a driver for the card written by someone from some site I never heard of before. This was for an office that handles somewhat sensitive information. So No. There are cards with drivers made for most versions of Linux though. Check the manufacturers web sites to be sure.

    Best of luck

  5. I can't say much about that version of LInux, but usually Linux handles pretty good all wireles cards, with some exceptions though.
Search this database for which ones are supported, which don't work well on linux or don't have a good support and so on…
  6. Which distro of Linux do you have?

Theoretically most wireless cards are supported.

Go into Linux System Admin and check whether it has been detected.

  7. I bought it with Windows Xp originally and have just now replaced it with Linux Xp due to too many problems with microsoft. And the card I have for when it was microsoft xp is NetGear and it tells me it wont work with linux.
  8. Did you install the *wl* package? I'm guessing you have one of the Broadcom chipsets, so you'll probably need to use ndiswrapper[1] or another similar driver package; if you're using the IntelPRO/Wireless adapter set, you'll need ipw3945[2] or similar. Other chips, such as the Atheros, will use the MadWifi[3] driver.

    Cheers.
