What's the difference between Operating system and Disk operating system (DOS)? What is actually Linux & UNIX?

….exactly, Linux-processing modes-batch processing, online processing means what? What are the time sharing-functions of Operating System?

  1. Windows is a O/S, It has to have Dos to run, The other are O/S's similar to Windows
  2. Disk Operating System (specifically) and disk operating system (generically), most often abbreviated as DOS (not to be confused with the DOS family of disk operating systems for the IBM PC compatible platform), refer to operating system software used in most computers that provides the abstraction and management of secondary storage devices and the information on them (e.g., file systems for organizing files of all sorts). Such software is referred to as a disk operating system when the storage devices it manages are made of rotating platters (such as hard disks or floppy disks).

    Operating System

An operating system (OS) is a software program that manages the hardware and software resources of a computer. A key component of system software, the OS performs basic tasks, such as controlling and allocating memory, prioritizing the processing of instructions, controlling input and output devices, facilitating networking, and managing files.

They are other OS's Linux is 1 like tht
    Ty.

  3. linux and unix are using same language and they are operating system too as xp or mac but they are not for populer use hey are used for special systems platform as telecom,a I know unix is established first and al of it is commands with abreviations then came linux and used for servers, unix and linux are free and candownloaded from the net,and now modified to be downloaded on normal OS as XP.
  4. operating system is a general term. various examples of operating system are dos, windows, linux, unix, freebsd etc. disk operating system (dos) is one of the earlier Operating systems, which was CUI (character user interface) based. in contrast of it, windows os is GUI (grahpical user interface), which has become very popular among commoners because of ease of use it offers. linux and unix are very powerful operating systems. Unix is CUI and Linux is becoming GUI. virus attacks of linux, unix are not so common. windows systems are more prone to virus attacks. regards. b.b.goyal, barnala. http://www.punjabcolleges.com/
