I am installing suse 10.0 linux onto my laptop but I don't know its sound card specifications. while installing, it takes ages to start sound card and I have to wait abort. any tips?

  1. Suse 10.0 is notorious for hardware resources. Your sound card might not be supported by SuSE, or more commonly, the linux kernel. You can try upgrading to the latest version of kernel, found at http://www.kernel.org, and with proper configuration for your specific sound card.

Also, see if your sound card manufacturer or another 3rd party has drivers for your hardware and install it. Then use modprobe to make sure its installed.

Also, if you install a new kernel version, which I dont recommend for novices, make sure you use "make menuconfig" and not "make xconfig". xconfig tends to hang, and crash. Its painful, where menuconfig is painless. Make sure you read the kernel docs also.
