Can I run a Linux server from my Windows Laptop?

I have a Dell laptop, 1.8ghz Intel Celeron M, 512 RAM, 80gb HD.

  1. And I also have a 320gb external HD.
  2. You can dual boot or you can give a Live Linux CD a try. Another method is to use VirtualBox which will allow you to run a virtual Linux server on your laptop while Windows is running. I use VirtualBox and love it. I have about 10 different Linux distros I can choose to boot, all from within windows without rebooting my machine.
  3. Is there anyway I can host a Linux server maybe off the external HD and run in through my Laptop? Or do I have to dual boot Linux and Windows? Or is it better to just ditch Windows and run the laptop as a server, as awkward as that seems. I'm pretty new at server configuration and Linux in general. I'd appreciate any help in the right direction.
  4. I feel you have three options to get your laptop linux enabled
    1. Wipe out Windows and install only linux.
    2. install linux with dual boot option to load windows also.
    3. Install VMWare in windows and install linux in VMWare so that you can have both Windows and Linux running simultaneously on your laptop. Also your laptop configuration will support that.

Windows Vista has option for extending memory with USB2.0 thumb drives, but I am not sure about Linux.

  5. If you have an old computer sitting around get it and turn it into your linux server. You only need about 128 meg of ram for non graphical mode.

  6. I want to know how I would go about hosting a decent Linux server using said components.
  7. Also I hear theres is a way to use USB thumb drives to expand memory if anyone knows.
