4. If you don't have shell access to your server, you'll need to contact your Web host and ask them to install the library for you (which generally means a couple recompiles).

   Alternatively, there are too many hosts out there who already have such basic things installed, and who allow you into the shell, to put up with that. Switch to DreamHost!
