How often does windows server 2003 crash?
How often does a linux server crash?
- I have not had personal experience with Linux, but do have with Win NT, 2K3 standard, and Novell Netware 5.1
The thing with any Windoze server is you can only run one "Big Momma" program on it at once. Yeah, I know servers are supposed to be able to multi-task, but Win server OS' can't handle running more than one server-side program with multiple clients accessing it.
Right now, I have a single 2K3 standard running a MS SQL database client management program and thus far, it has not crashed to a blue screen. But the only thing that's on it is the client management program, besides the usual antivirus-spyware-firewall programs. Of course, I periodically have to restart it after I've loaded the latest patches.
Now, my Netware server is the one everyone logs into to access the network. It also runs the antivirus and GroupWise internal email (like Exchange) server-side programs . And it was running the client management program as well until the company changed to SQL and we had to get the 2K3 server. It's also acts as a file server as well. The only time it's ever gone down is when I had to bring it down to fix a GW glitch and when I needed to upgrade some software. In the nearly four years I've been it's admin (was here when I got here,) it has never crashed once.
From what I've heard of Linux, it's pretty stable. As I see it, the main problem with it right now is there are too many flavors of it out there. It makes it tough for software developers to figure out which distro they should optimize their programs for. Also, finding device drivers for the various flavors can be a bit of a challenge as well. My $0.02 US.
Compute in Peace!!!
- For either system it depends on a lot of things. What are you running on them? what are they connected too? What services and applications are being run directly on it (win2003)
I've had several Win2003 servers run for months and months without crashing. I've had them crash within hours.
My opinion is that Linux servers are more stable, but there are somethings that may not run on them….
- as often as they like
- A lot…….
