What is the cheapest Server OS for a personal website. Oporating System, Not service. Linux server suggested?

  1. Any Linux sofware will be the cheapest. Most are free.
  2. You could try an Ubuntu Linux distribution (www.ubuntu.com).

Just install it in server mode - no gui.

  3. You could try Centos 4.3, its a free version of redhat enterprise
  4. Don't pay for anything, that is what I say. Everything you need to build, host, and manage a website is free except for the actual computer itself and the cost of the domain name.

For security, I usually run Unix, but you can run whatever you want. If you are looking for something easy and simple to setup go with Linux. If you want to dive into the world of web design, you can check out FreeBSD. It has everything you need to get started in its ports collection. And best of all, it's free!

  5. apache web server
