Please help me with my laptops!?

First of all I wanted to say thanks for even looking at this topic. Well just recently my dad bought or won two laptops from his work. I was pretty happy when I heard the news. He told me that they had alot of things on them and for me just to do a re installation of windows xp pro again to wipe out everything so I had my disks ready. When I turned on the laptop(hp) I pressed f10 to go to the boot from cd options and it said please insert your password but they didnt give me dad anything. So then I said might as well just login and do it from there. Well when I tried to login it said Novell something blah blah blah and I just went on the defualt user and then I got an error of network tree something something. then it said if u want to login to windows microsoft user and I clicked yes well I waited till everything loaded and I tried once more to install Windows Xp but then it came with an error saying, You must me a Administrator to open this file then I was like X-x….

  1. what to do what to do. Then I tried to change the user screen and it said it cannot due to this athgina.dll file something like that so I tried to locate it and delete it but I couldent due to it was protected. Well if anyone can help me out I will gladly appreciate it and if u want something in return please let me know ^-^.
  2. Wow, that's quite a situation. The laptop's BIOS is password protected, and I'm not sure how you'd reset it on a laptop. If your laptop has a floppy disk drive (not likely if it's a newer model), you can boot from it with a Windows boot floppy with cd drive support or use "smart boot manager," a utility that allows you to bypass the bios altogether to boot from the cd drive ( http://linux.simple.be/tools/sbm… ). Also you can try booting the laptop in safe mode (by repeatedly pressing the F8 key when the computer is starting up) and trying to install Windows XP from there. Safe mode is nice because you can sometimes get around alot of administrator requirements that regulate the installation of new software. Good Luck :-)
  3. well ive tried alot of things and nothing there is no way to reset to bios? and then run the win xp pro disk?
  4. its an hp laptop windows xp pro when I push f10 to do the boot something it says please insert admin password O_o;; im confused
  5. Well Thank you!
  6. Need to know what brand! Depending on what kind on what brand I can help you delete the password in almost any computer, whether it BIOS or Windows, It's tricky and could "KILL" your laptop.AND the wrong person reading this can use the info if they "Steal" a computer and get into it to steal files or personal info! IF it's all possible TRY TO GET THE PASSWORD FORM WHERE EVER HE GOT THEM!!!
  7. sounds like these laptops may have a BIOS password on them and they are not set to boot from CD-ROM. This is a pretty standard security tool anymore. Try getting into the BIOS setup (usally the F2 or Delete key) to set the boot device order. I've attached a couple of URLs with some good info on resetting BIOS passwords.

If these don't work, I'd recommend possibly trying to find new hard drives. Since they won't have any OS on them, it would be forced to boot from CD-ROM

  8. Did you try changing the BIOS to boot from the CD-ROM? If it's just a CD from Dell, it won't work this way, but if it's a generic copy of Windows XP, it'll work.

Note: There is a difference between the boot loader and the BIOS, I believe you were in the boot loader.
