Using a router on my companies LAN line?

Where I work there is wireless and LAN connections to the Internet. In my office I cannot pickup the wireless signal, but I do have a LAN line. I used my old linksys wrt54gs now I have wireless, but my office computer cannot connect to the server? The desktop doesn't have a wireless card and it is connected to the router by an Ethernet cable. My company requires a user name and password and uses novell software for that. What can I do to stop my router from blocking access to the Internet from my desktop? I disabled the routers firewall.

  1. Thats a really bad idea. Unless you have gotten approval from your IT Department your opening up a security hole in your companies network that could get you fired or sued.

Seriously talk with IT Department do not take it into your own hands.

  2. This is extremely risky. You can compromise your company's LAN and allow hackers in as well.

Most companies have very strict rules against rogue devices being installed - and often they specifically spell out adding network hardware on your own.

Further, in many companies this act in and of itself is grounds for discharge; in most companies, at a minimum they will take away your access to the IT system which prevents you from doing your job efficiently and this will ultimately lead to discharge.

Remove your unauthorized hardware immediately and get it out of the building.

After your improperly installed equipment has been gone for a few days, ask your IT people for help getting what you need.

Work with, not against other departments in your company.
