What is the best network server OS?
I DO NOT WANT MICROSOFT! Please do not answer unless that unless you are beyond beyond sure. I was thinking either Ubuntu or Novell. What are my other options? and what is best? I just want to set up a server for a home-run business.
- I am currently dual booting between Ubuntu and Windows, so I am pretty good with Ubuntu (I had to fix my linksys WPC54G card).
- MCSE 2003, CNE 5 and 6, LPI1, CCNP/CCDP/CCDA/CCDP, CCA, Dell Certified Engineer, and all around nice guy. You can email me if you wish but I will expect a "best answer" please.
- Hello Dude,
I have been doing this for a LONG time and have experience with most every OS that has ever been commonly available.
Microsoft is the easiest to install and support. It does what most people want it to do.
However, I am most partial to OES Linux from Novell. I think it has the most promise and opportunity for small businesses.
HOWEVER!!!!!!!! Linux and Novell are not for the common user. They are becoming more and more acceptable for basic users. I do not think they will ever be as well accepted and user friendly as Microsoft is right now.
I run OES Netware, and have to run Microsoft because of application compatibility.
Zenworks and Groupwise are probably the BEST things, beside eDirectory that Novell has going on right now.
