Can anybody suggest a linux distribution for kernel programming?
I am a student and I tried Fedora Core 5 and Red Hat 9 but I cant seem to make kernel modules with them.
- I want to make a netfilter firewall and I want to know which distribution and which kernel to use and also where could I learn how to compile the kernel if required.
- Why re-invent the wheel?
For a stand alone older PC firewall, that runs headless, I use http://ipcop.org on a PC of 120Mhz to 266 Mhz, with 32Mb or 64Mb RAM. Use a 1Gb drive. Protects/serves about 36 networked clients.
When I install in schools, businesses, homes, and they want to filter web content, then I need to use a 600mhz to 1ghz system, with 256 Mb of RAM, to run Dan's Guardian and filter all content.
It takes a 4GB or more drive, to store all the content in web page cache. The entire "system" and all programs, is under 120 Mb of data.
Then, if I want to run Spam Assassin with the automatic DL of blacklisted spammers domains, it just runs on any of those above systems.
I get free donated computers off the curbs, from small shops, and corporate donations to legitimate Non profits, on their letterhead. Many have the Microsoft license on the case, but, Microsfot runs upto 50X slower, is a virus magnet, and, the other third party applications needed cost about $1200 per USER!!!
Even Microsoft runs Linux on all firewalls (Aruba corporation) and all routers, and all 45,000 systems for MSN, Hotmail, and Microsoft domains, plus all the Redmond Campus, and the Linux Labs of 400 units. One Linux server replaces upto 12 Microsoft servers, two techs, and Linux has been virus free since 1993.
I install on the user systems in schools and businesses, either FC6, or http://pclinuxos.com
There are more tricks, but, too much to note here…
Note that Indiana State Schools just converted the first 20,000 Linux systems out of 300,000 scheduled, and stated a savings of $1200 per student.I read that Indiana is the 39th state to get smart, and abandon crippleware, vaporware, virusmagnet Micro$oft, the convicted multiple felon, on extended probation for THREE MORE YEARS!
- thanks alot
