Ever used WineHQ for linux?

Does anyone have any experience with wine, a program that allows you to use windows programs on linux? There is not too much I want from windows, I only need a few programs that are newer (I want to keep from installing multiple OS). The programs are newer and they have to use msi 3, but the wine enviroment is designed for Win 98 which only comes with msi 2. I tried using wine to install the msi 3, but it wants a newer OS than 98. Is there a way to update the dlls and config files for the newer msi? Thank you.
