Why does every Linux program I have downloaded give me problems?

I am currently using Fedora Core 6. I have downloaded xmms, real player 10, and Helix. All install fine but won't open except for xmms which I can't even find. xmms is in add\remove software but I can't find it anywhere to click on it to run it. I am new to Linux and would love to continue to use it but it seems so user unfriendly. Help a brotha out

  1. A guide to software installation on fedora, http://docs.fedoraproject.org/yum/en/…
  2. If you're new to Linux, the best distro for you to use is Ubuntu. The Ubuntu package manager (Debians apt-get) makes installing programs much easier, plus you can use tools like Automatix2 to install also. It has greater hardware support than most other distro's and is updated more frequently. Take advantage of the Ubuntu forums also. Get Ubuntu here:
    http://www.ubuntu.com

Then follow these instructions here for creating the "The Perfect Ubuntu Desktop".
    http://www.howtoforge.com/the_perfect_de…

    Then you'll be all set.
