Can you install and opererate Red Hat Linux along with Windows XP?

Yes.

One way to do this is with VMWARE which will let you run multiple operating systems at once in separate virtual machines.

yes. by a dual partition. also linux red hat has a samba compatible module. you can use the red hat as the main unit/ server and the windows as a client.
