If Linux is free operating system, then why Red Hat Linux company is selling his products and making profit?
Computers softwares
- Red Hat Linux is a corportae version of Linux and comes with support. Unlike other distrobutions, Red Hat actually lets you call them up for help, and it is detailed help. The income generated by the company allows for the deveopment of newer versions, unlike the free distros that rely on donations.
- Linux if I'm correct is one of the open source operating system. Meaning you can actually acquire and view the source code for the operating system.
But Linux in its purest form is a kernel. Its still has no applications, drivers and other things.
Some of the applications you can see in Red Hat, Fedora, Turbo Linux, Ubuntu, Mandrake, Suse, etc. came from other open source or free ware organization like gcc, g++, mc, vi, vim …
Red Hat Linux, Fedora, … etc. are compilations of open source programs, linux kernel, and the sometime suites own created programs. Sometimes they even improve the kernel for their suites difference to other Linux Suites.
Before what your buying or paying in Red Hat, Suse, Caldera, Mandrake is the company's effort to compile and ensure that at least the programs with the kernel are compatible. And that they have already compiled almost all the program / application you probably need. Also companies like Red Hat, Suse … etc. earn from sales of technical support.
Fedora Core is free offered by Red Hat, you only have to download. Its also complete. They just don't offer one year free technical support compared to when you buy Red Hat Enterprise. Suse also offer free download of their older version of Linux.
Companies like Red Hat sell their service as technical support, and compilling Linux. Its like this if you want to eat let's say fish. But you barely have time or clean it. You can buy fish in a market pre cleaned at a higher price. You pay for the effort someone made to clean it for you. Or you pay schools to teach your children. You pay Red Hat so that if your organization gets problem that hard to solve their there to help. Red Hat Enterprise and other Enterprise Linux are targeted for corporations. Corporations can't afford long down time that's why their willing to pay for additional technical help. Otherwise Linux targeted to common users only sell for making the effor of compilling the applications and testing that all the software, kernel, etc. are compatible.
Besides compared to Commercial OS and softwares Linux is a bit cheaper. Am I not correct?
Hope that helps with your question.
- Linux as an OS is free. Red Hat is a DISTRIBUTION of linux. They need to charge when you request a dvd or other media for installation. Tat is to stay afloat as a company and ut in more work into its development. The OS is free if you download it on the net though
- because the people live of money, no good charity
- Linux is a free for all with GNU/GPL on it. That means you can do everything you want to it either sell it or not, no one will sue you. Red Hat do use the Linux kernel but that doesnt mean they don't create applications. They have put some softwares in that package that only they have rights and also create some packages that will help administration easier and more manageability.
- red hat and xandros are the only one's I've see that charge. it may be because they offer tech support with their product or stuff like that. they're just as good as the free distro's
- the Linux O/S (kernal) is free. Red Hat sells a) support b) the graphical user interface that interfaces with the kernal.
- Get UBUNTU, is good. Im trying to install it. That one is free.
Also Red Hat Linux is a company, and the purpose of all companies are to make a profit or they will get out of the market. - Linux is not an OS, it is the kernel (the core part of the OS)
It is licensed under GPL (GNU Public Licence) as per which, you are free to use that even in commercial applications, only you have to give the due credit to the original creator.Every project requires money to continue. Not only Red Hat Inc, many other companies like Novell, etc are making profit by selling Linux kernel based operating systems, like RHEL, Suse, etc. But they don't sell as it is, they add functionality and features to that, tweak that to target specific usergroups, etc. They are free to do that.
But they still provide free alternatives.Like Fedora is sponsored by Red Hat, OpenSuse sponsored by Novell. And these are very good OSs. - Cause they provide a service that users will pay for. That's why.
