What is the best distro of linux to learn programing and networking on?

I have an A.E. in electronics, 2 courses short of a networking certificate and I'm A+ certified. I however have limited linux / unix experience.

What is best Linux distribution? Ubuntu Dapper or Novell SUSE Enterprise Desktop?

I use Ubuntu Dapper and I love it but I sow a lot of media related informations about how great is Novell Desktop and diserve it's price (50 USD). My question, because Ubuntu I can get for no price, it diserves in the point of view of developper or home user (that are the points that I use most) to pay and use Novell Desktop? Ubuntu seems to me with a newer desktop but less polished. If I will buy Novell Desktop I will sustain the projects that Novell keeps like Mono, XGL and compiz. I wait your answers
