Can I dual boot Windows XP Home with SUSE Linux 10.1 and not ruin my windows files on the partition I install?

  1. Sure, I'm dual booting XP and Suse Linux right now. The trick is to use the Windows' boot loader, not Suse's. (I tried it the other way, but was never able to get it to work.)
  2. Use an offline storage to save your files before you attempt this procedure. Then down load your files afterwords.
  3. yes u can. I run three os's right now, just make sure u dont run vista or longhorn
  4. You should be able to do this with no problems, it would be better to have a separate hard drive, but Suse will partition by default with no problems, just accept the default options through the install process, Suse's grub bootloader should work fine, you may want to change the default OS which will be suse rather than windows, easy to do with kmenu>system>control centre>system>bootloader. Even though the process should go with no problems, always backup before hand and make sure you defrag windows first.
  5. Here's a good tutorial:

  6. I'd put Linux on a seperate drive unless you are good with linux. You might want to backup Windows before you try.

If windows was first, you'll have to fix the windows boot files

  7. You can, but need to first, partition your single harddrive into 2 logical drive.

I play safe, I do dual boot, but Fedora 5 on 1 single physical hard drive, and Win XP on another physical hard drive.
